The Institute of Mentalphysics, also known as the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, stands as a unique blend of spiritual history and architectural beauty. Founded in 1927 by Ding Le Mei, this place has attracted seekers of spiritual growth and those fascinated by its distinctive mid-modern design. We went and checked out the compound. Watch the video we produced with Maggie Miles.

The Origins of the Institute of Mentalphysics
Ding Le Mei, a spiritual teacher with a vision, established the Institute of Mentalphysics nearly a century ago. The institute was created as a place for meditation, self-discovery, and connection with nature. It quickly became known for its unique blend of Eastern and Western spiritual teachings, focusing on mental clarity, energy work, and personal transformation.
The community that formed around the institute could be described as a spiritual cult by some, due to its strong emphasis on group practices and the charismatic leadership of Ding Le Mei. Members committed themselves to daily meditation, study, and rituals designed to raise consciousness. The institute’s remote location in Joshua Tree provided a peaceful environment for these practices, away from the distractions of city life.
